Protocol summary

Summary
Schizophrenic patients are at greater risk of premature death which is mostly due to cardio vascular diseases. A major risk factor for cardiovascular accidents is metabolic syndrome . Metabolic syndrome frequency is about 30% in schizophrenic patients that is due to a basic change in body metabolism of this group or as a major side effect of neuroleptic drugs. Up to now studies failed to introduce a single ingredient for treatment of metabolic syndrome in this population that is both effective on all the aspects of this disorder( hyper-lipidemia, hyper-glycemia, high blood pressure, central obesity) and does not worsen patients psychiatric symptoms either. After studying previous reviews on the efficacy of herbal medicine on metabolic syndrome and lack of previous reports on considerable psychiatric side effects of these ingredients. We considered a double blind Randomized controlled Trial evaluating the efficacy of Celery, Dill, and Green tea on the metabolic syndrome in 60 chronic schizophrenic patients who were admitted in one of the wards of Razi psychiatry hospital. patients must have been stable for the last two month and the need for change in patients medication would exclude them from the trial. Patients were categorized into two ‘case’ and ‘control’ groups. We evaluated patients’ weight, waist circumference, BP, TG, FBS, and HDL as variables indicator of metabolic syndrome prior to intervention and in 3 interval,Also patients were evaluated for side effects during the study.
