The main aim of this study was prevention of suicide in Khorram Abad. The target was general population. The intervention components are: 1) capacity building in the first year included: improving the knowledge and skills of primary health care network (PHC) staff, improvement of referral system, improving of registration system, establishment of necessary treatment services. 2) the intervention was performed in the second year included: active screening and case finding, drug treatment of the identified cases, holding 5-consultation sessions had been carried out for the identified cases and their families for the dwellers in urban area and following the treatment of identified cases by Behvarzes (health workers) in rural areas. The main outcome was the rate of suicide and suicidal attempt and the other outcome was the rate of identified depressed cases by PHC network. Koohdast, one hundred Km away from Khoram Abad, which was socio-culturally correspondent, was considered as control city.

Description
In the first step the capacity of the PHC network was improved in terms of the knowledge and skills of the staff, referral system in PHC network, registration system for suicide behaviors and depressed cases. In the second step, active screening to identify the depressed cases was carried out, drug treatment by general practioners and treatment followed up by Behvarzes in rural areas and holding 5-consulting session for the depressed and attempted cases in urban areas was carried out.
