Protocol summary

Study aim
To evaluate the effects of transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation with or without biofeedback on functional non-retentive fecal incontinence in children.
Design
Forty five children with functional non-retentive fecal incontinence were enrolled in the study. Patients were randomly allocated into three equal treatment groups in a balanced randomization study using random block sizes of 4 (ratio; 1:1).
Settings and conduct
This study was performed in the Children's Medical Center , Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Participants including major eligibility criteria: Inclusion criteria including: age 5 years old or more, at least once fecal incontinence episodes per week . Exclusion criteria including: neuropathic bowel dysfunction, inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic disease.
Intervention groups
Intervention: Group 1 comprised of 15 patients who underwent transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation (20 minutes on the anal region) and pelvic floor muscles training by biofeedback for 10 treatment sessions. Group 2 comprised of 15 patients who underwent transcutaneous functional electrical stimulation (20 minutes on the anal region ) for 10 treatment sessions. Control group including 15 patients who underwent only medical treatment. All patients ( cases and controls) were evaluated at the end of treatment sessions and 6 months later by bowel habit diary and then results were compared between groups.
Main outcome variables
Primary outcome is a decrease in fecal soiling episodes per week . Secondary outcomes are changing in defecation frequency per week, stool form and pain score.
