In this study we evaluated the the effect of training nurses and midwives in communication skills in increasing the amount of effective breastfeeding in first days after the birth and in communication skills of health professionals . we evaluated the skills and effective breastfeeding in the first days after birth, before , immediately after , 3 and 6 months after a workshop .The study population consisted of 27 nurses and midwives at the maternity ward of Vali-Asr hospital and at least 100 mothers . Nurses and midwives must have at least a bachelor's degree and should have passed their obligatory duties. Mothers are enrolled if they have been with their newborns for at least the past 12 hours , the baby is born maximum 48 hours ago and there is no contraindication to breastfeeding. the study has a before- after design . A 4 hour workshop is held and the Evaluation of breastfeeding ( by direct observation) evaluation of skills( by OSCE) is performed before , immediately after , 3 and 6 months after the workshop .

Description
This is a before-after study and one intervention is done on one group. Intervention consists of a 4- hour workshop which will be held 2 to 3 times for maximum participation . In the beginning of these workshops a video clip of incorrect communication between a health care professional and a mother will be shown . The content has been confirmed by The Society for Promoting breastfeeding.The participants will be asked to work in groups to fill an assessment Check List. Then the clip is reviewed once again based on sub- skills including: starting consultation, encouraging mother to expression of feelings and concerns , listening skills , asking open questions , giving information and feedback , and closing the consultation . Each of these skills are then practiced in form of small exercise scenarios and short training . ،The emphasis is on skills in which the greatest weakness has been observed in the evaluation before the intervention .
