This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of metformin in the control of weight gain related to sodium valproate medication. Study population is 50 adult patients with migraine receiving sodium valproate referred to Yahyanejad Clinic who have inclusion criteria and do not have exclusion criteria. These patients will be allocated randomly in four groups. The first intervention group, included 10 persons, 500 milligram metformin (ARYA Company) in a day for twelve weeks, the second intervention group, included 10 persons, 500-1000 milligram metformin in a day for twelve weeks, and the third intervention group, included 10 persons, 1000-2000 milligram metformin in a day for twelve weeks will be prescribed. The control group, included 20 patients, will receive only education for improvement of nutrition regimen in addition to placebo. Also, nutrition improvement will be educated face-to-face in the three intervention groups.
At baseline, all of the four groups will be interviewed by a psychiatrist, also, quality of life, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar and lipids, renal and hepatic function will be examined. After 4, 8 and 12 weeks of metformin administration, side-effects, drug tolerance, besides weight and body mass index will be assessed. At the end of the 12th week, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, venous blood tests and quality of life of the patients will be evaluated again.
