Objectives: The Effectiveness of Cognitive Remediation on social skills in elderly Patients with chronic Schizophrenia. social skills include communications skills, self-care and behavioral problems with others.
Design: This quasi-experimental study carried out using a control group. The Research Community included all elderly patients with schizophrenia hospitalized in Razi Psychiatric Center
Setting: 60 participants were chosen according to study eligibility criteria and assigned randomly into two equal control and intervention groups. Data gathering was done using a questionnaire called « questionnaire for measuring the damages done to daily living skills in mental patient"
Inclusion criteria: having schizophrenia diagnosis based on the information in the medical file and according to the treating psychiatrist؛ aged 60 years and above ؛ The patient's willingness to participate in the study؛ Ability to respond to the questionnaire questions؛ no alcohol and drug abuse؛ Ability to communicate verbally؛ The absence of disability and limitations in hearing and vision and Exclusion criteria: reluctance of patients to continue treatment؛ Elder died during the study period؛ stroke؛ physically debilitating diseases؛ escalation or recurrence of mental illness
Intervention:
Intervention group received 16 sessions cognitive Remediation training by using scenarios in which the elderly should use the remaining and healthy cognitive skills. The aim was to try and reduce the cognitive deficits of patients. Scenarios was performed from simple to complex. Each session lasted 30 minutes on average and was carried out twice a week. In control group No training provided.
Outcome variables: Communications skills؛ self-care and behavioral problems.
