Protocol summary

Study aim
The aim of the current study is to compare the efficacy of ondansetron and clonazepam in reducing the incidence and severity of PONV and postoperative pain in patients undergoing LC.
Design
In this research, 90 eligible patients referring to Shahid Faghihi hospital were chosen purposefully and were randomly divided into 3 groups of first and second interventions and control. Groups allocation were concealed by assigning a unique code to each participants.
Settings and conduct
Shahid Faghihi hospital, a tertiary healthcare center affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: patients scheduled for elective LC, having an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status of I or II, between 18 and 65 years of age. Exclusion criteria: patients with body mass index (BMI) more than 30 kg/m2, history of previous severe PONV, history of motion sickness, significant gastrointestinal problems, recent antiemetic drugs consumption, smokers, impaired kidney or liver functions and menstruating, pregnant or lactating females, migraine or cluster headaches, mental retardation or psychiatric disorder and those with chronic alcohol consumption.
Intervention groups
First study group receive 2 mg of oral clonazepam and intravenous injection of placebo 15-minute prior to induction of anesthesia Second group receive 4 mg intravenous injection of ondansetron and oral tablets of placebo in the same time window Control group receive oral and intravenous injection of placebo accordingly
Main outcome variables
Normal vaginal delivery (NVD) percentage
