Effect of ginger supplementation in adjunct with non-surgical periodontal therapy on periodontal status, serum levels of interleukin 6 and some serum antioxidant markers in type 2 diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of ginger supplementation in adjunct with non- surgical periodontal therapy on periodontal status, interleukin 6 and some antioxidant parameters in T2DM patients with chronic periodontitis.

In this double-blind, single center clinical trial study, 46 diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis are selected and randomly divided into two intervention (n=23) and control (n=23) groups. Randomization will be done using sealed envelope method.

In this double-blinded clinical trial, 96 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with some symptoms of periodontal disease are recruited from endocrinology and metabolism clinics of Golestan Hospital of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Science, Iran. Subjects are referred to Dental Clinic for further diagnosis to confirm periodontal disease. coding done by a third person of health care who does not know anything about the research and the researchers and patients does not know about the contents of the packets.

Inclusion criteria: Males and females aged 30 – 60 y؛ type 2 diabetic patients who have been suffering from the disease for at least 5 years؛ have chronic periodontal disease؛ BMI ≥ 18.5 and < 30kg/m2. Exclusion criteria: diabetic patients being under insulin therapy؛ pregnancy؛ breast feeding؛ history of periodontal treatment؛ thyroid disorders.

In this double-blind clinical trial, 46 diabetic patients with chronic periodontitis are selected and randomly divided into two intervention (n=23) and control (n=23) groups. The intervention group receives four 500 mg ginger tablets per day (1g before lunch, 1g before dinner) for 60 days. Also, the control group receives four 500 mg placebo tablets (containing chickpea flour) per day (1g before lunch, 1g before dinner), for 60 days. The placebo and ginger tablets are produced by Dineh Company, Iran.

The serum levels of IL-6; Activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD؛ CAT؛ GSHPx); Periodontal indices including (Bleeding index؛ Pocket depth؛ Plaque index and Clinical attachment level).
