Protocol summary

Study aim
Comparison of the effect of high frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) with low frequency TENS on pain, and physical discomforts in patients with muscle tension dysphonia
Design
Clinical trial with two arm parallel group with 26 patients
Settings and conduct
This clinical trial will be performed on 26 patients with muscle tension dysphonia in Amir A'lam Hospital in Tehran. The presence of MTD in patients will be detected by an ear, nose and throat physician and a speech and language pathologist. Patients will be divided into two groups, one low-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy group and another will receive high-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. The assessment of musculoskeletal pain and vocal tract discomfort will be used to investigate the treatment outcome.
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: The presence of muscle tension dysphonia The age range between 18 to 45 years Exclusion criteria: Smoking Pregnancy A history of various types of laryngeal malignancies A history of laryngeal surgery A history of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the head and neck area
Intervention groups
The low-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation group and high-frequency transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation group
Main outcome variables
Musculoskeletal pain, Vocal tract discomfort

Randomization (investigator's opinion)
Randomized
Randomization description
For randomization, each participant picks a number between 1 and 26 from the bag: odd numbers were assigned to group 1 (Low-frequency TENS) and even numbers were assigned to group 2 (High-frequency TENS).
Blinding (investigator's opinion)
Single blinded
Blinding description
In the present study, the participants are kept blind and will not be aware of the frequency type of electrical stimulation which be used.
