Protocol summary

Study aim
Comparison of Aloe Vera and Paradontax herbal toothpaste efficacy on the plaque, bleeding and mild to moderate gingivitis in Guilan dental school students in the academic year 99-1400
Design
Randomized, parallel, and double-blind clinical trial. To determine the sample size concerning the repetition of the measurements in 2 groups for each individual, the effect of each individual must be regarded. So the suitable formula with duplicate sizes is used. Considering 4 repitition, a correlation of 0.50, the statistical power of 80%, error level of 0.05, and standard deviation of previous studies based on plaque index equal to 0.55, the minimum sample size equal to 20 for each group. It has been found that considering the probability of specimen shedding in each group, 24 individuals are considered. The trial is in phase 3. ________________________________________
Settings and conduct
Students of Guilan Dental School will be selected by the available sampling method after the initial examination according to the inclusion criteria. They are randomly divided into two groups, and the examiner who measures and records the indicators is generally unaware of the study process.
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Patients are selected from non-smoker youth with mild gingivitis, at least 20 teeth and a complete health situation, free of periodontal pockets, clinical attachment loss, systemic problems, use of medications affecting the periodontium. Also, they must not have been received non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatments during the one and three past months.
Intervention groups
Patients are divided into two groups of Aloe Vera and Paradontax toothpaste recipients. Both are given standard health instruction and determined toothpaste at the beginning of the study.
Main outcome variables
Primary outcomes include: Dental plaque index, gingival bleeding index, gingivitis index.
