Summary
Introduction : The most common types of learning disability are: reading, writing and mathematics disorder. Giving appropriate information about learning disability, to the parents , improves parents-child relationship. This study evaluated the effect of parenting education on the improvement of reading and writing disability in children. Methods : A randomized controlled trial on primary school students with reading and writing disability and their mothers. Inclusion criteria for students : diagnosis of reading and writing disability accordingto DSM-IV criteria ;no family problem (divorce, separation and adoption); no deafness, blindness, paralysis and developmental disorder. Inclusion criteria for mothers : graduation from high school. Subjects divided into three groups ,with 26 members in each group. Mothers group received educational sessions .Standard group received standard educations for learning disability .Three groups were evaluated via pre and post tests at baseline and after one and three months educational interventions. Added comments : Interventions in 3 groups: Intervention group: Students᾽ mothers formed a group with 26 members and received 6 one-hour educational sessions according to educational protocol including: parenting method and reading and writing special education methods. Then these mothers educated their children for 3 months. Mothers’ education sessions included: First session: Introduction to reading and writing disability (by child and adolescent psychiatrist) Second session: How can parents help the child with learning disability? (by child and adolescent psychiatrist) Third session: Positive communication with the child (by child and adolescent psychiatrist) Fourth session: Education of reward and stress control methods (by child and adolescent psychiatrist) Fifth session: Special education of reading, development of visual and hearing memory (by specialist of learning disability education) Sixth session: Special education of writing (by specialist of learning disability education) After the sixth session, mothers took a post-test about their degree of satisfaction from educational sessions. Then mothers taught their children in 12-15 educational sessions and their children were evaluated at baseline and 1 and 3 months after educational interventions. Standard group: Including 26 students with reading and writing disability which were educated individually (routine method of learning centers) in 12-15 educational sessions. These children were evaluated at baseline and 1 and 3 months after educational interventions. Control group: Including 26 students with reading and writing disability in waiting lists of educational centers. Treatment modalities didn’t begin for these students but they were put prior to other patients, in waiting lists of learning centers. Students whose mothers were absent from two educational sessions, were excluded.
