Effect of sexual counseling versus control group on self-concept and sexual satisfaction of women with pelvic organs prolapse: a randomized clinical trial

To assess the effect of sexual counseling versus control group on self-concept and sexual satisfaction of women with pelvic organs prolapse

This is a randomized clinical trial with control group, in which eligible patients will be randomly assigned through the block randomization to the intervention and control groups

This study will be performed in the Fatemieh Hospital in Hamadan city on 60 women with pelvic organs prolapse. The patients will be randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups through the block randomization. Blinding is not possible in this study.

Inclusion criteria: Age 30 to 50 years; Grade II prolapse of the pelvic organs; Having a negative sexual self-concept; Married with a history of at least 2 years of married life; Being literate; Exclusion criteria: Receiving medication and surgical intervention

Intervention group: Routine treatment in addition to sexual counseling sessions for 45 to 60 minutes once a week for 4 weeks, including familiarity with the anatomy and physiology of the genital tract, pelvic organ prolapse, factors influencing prolapse and effective prevention strategies, sexual cycle in women and men, factors affecting the sexual cycle, helping clients to express their wants and needs, expressing their feelings and any doubts, concerns and questions, emphasis on maintaining a healthy diet and physical activity, providing communication skills techniques, sexual skills, familiarity with methods to increase sexual function, and expressing the importance of positive and negative sexual hypothesis on quality of life. Control group: Just routine treatment

Primary outcome: Sexual self-concept, sexual satisfaction

The patients will be randomly assigned to intervention and control groups using block randomization. For this purpose, we will prepare four sheets of paper, writing on two sheets the name of the intervention and on the other two sheets the name of the control. The paper sheets will be pooled, placed in a container, and randomly drawn one at a time for each patient without replacement until all four sheets are drawn. The four paper sheets will be then placed back into the container, and this action repeated until the sample size is reached.
