Protocol summary

Study aim
evaluate the effects of carboxytherapy on the signs and symptoms of sensory neuropathy in diabetic patients.
Design
Sample Size: 50 patients Study population: Patients with diabetic sensory neuropath Calculation the sample size: Due to the pilot nature of the study and the facilities of the research team Sampling Method: Targeted Data collection technique: Observation and interview This study was performed in a pre-and post-intervention design. Repeated measures linear model (repeated measures ANOVA) or Friedman test was used to analyze data and compare the outcomes between the study groups at three follow-up stages (for the data fulfilling normal distribution). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS software version 16.
Settings and conduct
Fifty patients entered the study, each participant received highly concentrated CO2-enriched water once a day for 15 days and then once a week for three months. The prevalence of neuropathy-related signs and symptoms was assessed using the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaires, before, after 15 sessions and after 3 months.
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Patients with diabetic sensory neuropathy referring to the endocrinology clinic of Loghman e Hakim Hospital, who have been suffering from type 1 or type 2 diabetes for more than 5 years. Non-entry conditions: The patient's unwillingness to participate in the study Diabetic motor neuropathy Age below 20 and above 70 years Having neuropathy due to other causes of neuropathy
Intervention groups
The patients placed their feet in a CO2-enriched water bath (39°C, the concentration of 1100 ppm)
Main outcome variables
CO2-enriched water; Score of Michigan Neuropathy Screening Questionnaire in three follow-up periods; Intensity of numbness, burning pain, muscle cramp in three follow-up periods

Intervention groups

1

Description
Intervention group: First, the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) (10) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaires were completed by patients. Then, patients placed their feet in a CO2-enriched water bath (39°C, the concentration of 1100 ppm) daily for 15 days and 30 minutes each time. After completing the sessions, patients were re-evaluated and filled out the questionnaires again to record possible changes. Sessions were set once a week for three months (30 minutes at each session), and then the patients underwent the same examinations again to detect any change in patient’s symptoms.
