Protocol summary

Summary
(1) Objectives: to examine the impact of Pictorial and Teach-back educational strategies on knowledge about diabetes disease, adherence to medication and diet among people with diabetes type 2 and low health literacy attending to diabetes unit of Imam Khomeini hospital in saqqez. (2) Design: a randomized clinical trial (3) Setting and Conduct: 127 people with diabetes type 2 and low health literacy from Unit of Diabetes, Imam Khomeini Hospital in Saqqez were enrolled and allocated to three arms of study (control, Pictorial and Teach-back groups). Questionnaires was used to gathering demographic data, the level of functional health literacy in adults (TOFHLA), knowledge on the subject of diabetes, adherence to medication and diet. The validity and reliability of Questionnaires were assessed and confirmed through content validity and test- retest methods. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA and Paired t test in SPSS software version 16. (4) Participants including major eligibility Criteria: Inclusion criteria Obtaining health literacy score<59; afflicted to Diabetes type 2; age over 18; able to read and write; Exclusion criteria Lack of dementia; visual or learning disability; no afflicted to diabetes type one; no participation in other research project. (5) Intervention: intervention groups received diabetes education by Teach Back and Pictorial methods respectively, the control group received regular diabetes education offered by Diabetes Unit. (6) Main Outcome Measures: knowledge on the subject of diabetes, adherence to medication and diet.
