Aim: we decided to evaluate effect of acupuncture on diminishing the pain during ESWL.
Design: Patients with stones located in the pelvicalyceal system of the kidney that have been scheduled for ESWL, were visited by Acupuncture specialist before starting ESWL. They randomly divided into two groups of True Acupuncture and Sham acupuncture
Subjects: Inclusion criterion: patients candidate ESWL reffered to Imam Reza Hospital.
Exclusion criteria: urinary Infection; history of sensory neurologic, bone anomaly, addiction and any pain because renal stone.
Intervention: In the first group, acupuncture was carried out in 4 special points of acupuncture for 30 minutes and in the second group acupuncture was ineffectively applied to the same points for 30 minutes.
Main outcome measure: Then ESWL was begun and a blind observer relative to acupuncture recorded the intensity of pain using the numeric 0-10 VAS scale.
