Protocol summary

Summary
Objectives: To assess the effect of turmeric extract versus topical phenytoin and placebo on healing of open wound after pilonidal sinus surgery. Design: A double blind randomized clinical trial. Setting and conduct: The eligible patients with pilonidal sinus who will undergo surgery in Besat Hospital during the study period will be enrolled into the trial. Inclusion criteria: Age of 18 to 65 years; pilonidal sinus candidate for surgery. Exclusion criteria: Diabetes; Immunodeficiency; local abscess. Intervention group 1: Topical cream including turmeric extract on surgical wound twice a day for 2 weeks. Intervention group 2: Topical cream including phenytoin on surgical wound twice a day for 2 weeks. Control group: Topical placebo cream on surgical wound twice a day for 2 weeks Primary outcome: Healing of surgical wound one and two week and also one month after surgery via physical examination. Randomization: Random assignment of the patients to the intervention and control groups through drawing of lots. Blinding: Patients will be unaware of the type of intervention. The physician who will examine the patients will not be aware of the intervention. Therefore, the trial will be run as double blind.
