The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of an active and passive approach in improving the nurses' performance in implementing guidelines for the prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia in Critical Care Units. Three selected hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences will be randomly assigned to the active and passive intervention and control groups. These hospitals have equal aspects for recruitment and have similar nursing performance. One hundred and twenty nurses who are working in these hospitals will be participated in this study by convenience sampling. Inclusion criteria: Bachelor's degree or higher and having at least 3 months of service in critical care units.
Exclusion criteria: Not willing to continue participation in study or transferring to other wards.
At first nurses' performance in prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia will be evaluated by a self-administered questionnaire. For passive intervention group a poster containing recommendations of prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia will be installed over the wall for each bed. For active intervention group in addition to install a poster over the wall for each bed, educational workshops and feedback about nurses' performance will be given. In control group, without any intervention, just nurses' preventative performance will be evaluated before and 1 month later. After one month nurses' preventative performance will be evaluated by the self-administered questionnaire in 3 groups. Finally data will be compared in 3 groups.
