Evaluation of the effect of Group reflection on the knowledge and the skills of nurses in patient handover process from recovery to general surgery units
Determining the effect of group reflection on the knowledge and skills of nurses in the process of nursing handover from recovery to general surgery units
Design
Single group clinical trial without blinding, Census sampling including 41 nurses and 123 nursing handover processes
Settings and conduct
The place of implementation of the project is the recovery and general surgery units of Namazi Hospital.
How to run:
Sending an introduction letter and visiting the hospital Sampling by head count method
Obtaining written and verbal consent to participate in the study
Presentation of demographic profile questionnaire and knowledge test to the
participants
Before the start of reflection sessions, from each participant, a delivery
process is observed in each shift and the nursing handover process evaluation
checklist is completed.
Divide participants into groups of 7 people
Organizing 3 group reflection sessions for each group
Sharing at least two scenarios in each session
One week after the intervention: conducting the knowledge test again, observing a handover of a participant in each shift and completing the checklist for evaluating the nursing handover process
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
The intended participants in this study include nurses involved in the nursing handover process from recovery to general surgery units.
Intervention groups
A single-group interventional study only includes the experimental group, and the desired intervention in this study is holding reflection sessions and group discussions with nurses involved in the nursing handover process.
Main outcome variables
Group Reflection; Knowledge and skills of nurses in the field of nursing handover process

Description
It is an interventional study with a before-and-after design, so the interventions are carried out in the same way for all samples. At first, demographic characteristics questionnaire and knowledge test are given to the studied community. Before starting the reflection sessions, from each participant, a handover process is observed in each shift and the nursing handover process evaluation checklist is completed by the researcher. In order to intervene, the samples are divided into groups of seven by the researcher, and 3 group reflection sessions are held for each group, and at least two scenarios are shared in each session. Since group reflection is a learner-oriented approach based on discussion in small groups, the principles of group discussion and group dynamics will be followed, and the researcher will play the role of facilitator and the discussion will be done by the participants. Group reflection is done according to the 6-step Gibbs model. In this way, first the scenario is read by one person in the group, and then the discussion takes place in six stages based on the questions that are included at the end of the scenario. After the intervention, we give one week time for the contents to stabilize in the learner's mind, and then the knowledge test is performed again, and also from each participant, one delivery in each shift, observation and checklist of nursing handover process evaluation in the same way as the pre-test is completed.
