To compare the outcomes of patients suffering from frozen shoulder treated with a suprascapular nerve block combined with an axillary block versus a suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) alone.
Design
Non Randomised Contrial Trial (Quasi-Experimental Study Design)
Settings and conduct
Department of Anesthesia, Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: All patients aged 18–80 years presenting to the pain clinic of the Department of Anesthesia with frozen shoulder diagnosed clinically by a pain consultant, with restriction in the range of motion in at least two planes, including internal rotation, external rotation, and abduction, or diagnosed on MRI with features suggestive of coracohumeral ligament thickening.
Exclusion criteria: Patients with advanced cardiac or respiratory disease, patients with other shoulder joint arthropathies, patients with rotator cuff tears, patients already on steroids or with a history of intra-articular joint injections within the last 6 months, patients allergic to bupivacaine or triamcinolone, and patients unwilling to participate in the study.
Intervention groups
The patients were divided into Group A (n=40) to receive the combined suprascapular and axillary block and Group B (n=40) to receive the suprascapular block alone. Written informed consent was obtained from all patients after informing in detail about procedure risks and complication. Patients were allocated to the two groups using a non-probability consecutive sampling technique followed by the lottery method and were blinded to the procedure being performed.
