Protocol summary
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of selenium supplementation on gene expression involved in inflammation signaling pathway in patients with gestational diabetes. Study design: Parallel double-blind (both patients and researchers) randomized controlled clinical trial. Random assignment will be done by the use of computer-generated random numbers. Inclusion criteria: Patients with gestational diabetes and aged 18 to 40 years will be included in this study. Exclusion criteria: Unwillingness to cooperate will be excluded in the study. Population and sample size: 40 patients with gestational diabetes of eligible and referred to Kosar Clinic affiliated to Arak University of Medical Sciences, Arak, Iran in the study will be selected. Intervention: Patients will be assigned to receive either selenium (n=20) or placebo (n=20). Selenium and placebos capsules are similar in shape and size. Fasting blood samples will be taken at baseline and 6 weeks after the intervention. At the beginning and end of the intervention: 6 weeks. Outcomes: Gene expression involved in TNF-α (primary outcomes), and other inflammatory factors (secondry outcomes) signaling pathway will be quantified at study baseline and end-of-trial.

Protocol summary
Study aim
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of selenium supplementation on gene expression involved in inflammation signaling pathway in patients with gestational diabetes.
Design
Study design: Parallel double-blind (both patients and researchers) randomized controlled clinical trial. Random assignment will be done by the use of computer-generated random numbers.
Settings and conduct
Population and sample size: 40 patients with gestational diabetes of eligible and referred to Kosar Clinic affiliated to Arak University of Medical Sciences, Arak, Iran in the study will be selected.
Participants/Inclusion and exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Patients with gestational diabetes and aged 18 to 40 years will be included in this study. Exclusion criteria: Taking selenium supplements before the intervention, needing insulin therapy, placenta abruption, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, hypo and hyperthyroidism and Smokers
Intervention groups
Intervention: Patients will be assigned to receive either selenium (n=20) or placebo (n=20). Selenium and placebos capsules are similar in shape and size.
Main outcome variables
Outcomes: Gene expression involved in TNF-α (primary outcomes), and other inflammatory factors (secondry outcomes) signaling pathway will be quantified at study baseline and end-of-trial.
